Since we’re here in the middle of winter, we thought this would be the perfect time to offer a few natural hydration tips to keep your skin soft and supple despite the wind chill. If you’re looking for an extra dose of hydration (and not another synthetically-scented product that just makes dryness worse), here are a few natural moisturizing ingredients to try:

Natural Moisturizers for Facial Hydration
Jojoba oil
Jojoba oil is a plant-wax-based oil that treats minor irritation and chapped skin. I can prevent further dryness, especially caused by wind and cold. It contains fatty acids and several vitamins and minerals to nourish skin. Plus, it has a much longer shelf life than most natural oils. It does not go rancid over time. Although an oil, jojoba wax can actually help cleanse and remove makeup or dirt from your skin. It’s also non-comedogenic, so you can use it on your face without risking acne breakouts. You can learn more about jojoba oil here.
Sunflower oil
Sunflower is another fantastic light, non-comedogenic oil for retaining moisture. Since it is so light, it works well as a carrier oil (but be careful if you have nut or ragweed allergies since sunflower oil may trigger those as well). Overall, it works well for sensitive skin and has vitamin E, an antioxidant that protects and heals skin. It may help reduce lines and wrinkles. Learn more about sunflower oil here.
Rice bran oil
Rice bran oil is a gentle oil commonly used in skincare products to keep skin soft and supple. It has skin-brightening properties and may help prevent the signs of aging, reducing dark spots, lines, and wrinkles. Rice bran is ideal for evening skin tone and brightening skin complexion while providing extra hydration. It absorbs quickly and is non-comedogenic, so it works well with oily, combination, or acne-prone skin.
Aloe Vera
Aloe is excellent on cuts, burns, and other wounds because of its healing properties. It’s used in many health care products, and you can even purchase it in drink form now (however, be careful as it may interact with medications or cause laxative effects)! It also has anti-aging properties, so it’s wonderful for skin care. Aloe boosts collagen and elastin and has humectants that help gently moisturize skin. Pure aloe is non-comedogenic and will not clog pores (but consider other ingredients the aloe may be mixed with).
Calendula
Calendula oil is incredibly soothing if you struggle with dry, itchy skin. It calms irritation, and it’s lower on the comedogenic scale. Often paired with flower blossoms, this ultra-light oil is soft and refreshing, quickly absorbing into the skin.
Oatmeal
Oatmeal provides extra-long hydration benefits. If you have sensitive skin, moisturizing with oatmeal can be a great option. For full-body hydration, bathe with colloidal oatmeal to soothe irritation and prevent dryness. Oatmeal boosts collagen and reduces inflammation while helping your skin retain moisture naturally. It’s soothing for babies and all skin types, even the most sensitive.
Squalane
Squalane is the ultimate natural facial hydration booster! Squalene (with an -e) is naturally produced in our skin but goes rancid quickly when harvested from plants. So, squalane is a similar hydrogenated compound that is more stable and easily absorbed to nourish skin. Most squalane is produced from olives, and it works exceptionally well to combat aging signs. Natural Moisturizers for Body Hydration
Coconut oil
Unlike jojoba oil, coconut oil can clog pores, so it’s better to use it as an ingredient in soap or for severely rough/dry areas on your body rather than your face. Coconut oil moisturizes by locking water into the skin and protecting skin against harsh wind/cold. Coconut oil tends to be heavy, so it’s ideal for winter. It can be too much for warm, humid weather.
Olive oil
Try applying a small amount of olive oil immediately after showering (body only, not face). Your pores will be open to lock in moisture more effectively. Olive oil also has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Olive oil is a bit heavy and may clog pores in acne-prone areas. Because of that, like coconut oil, olive works well as an ingredient in soap or moisturizer instead of applying directly.
Avocado oil
Avocado oil works well in rich, creamy moisturizers, like body butter. It’s best mixed in as a secondary ingredient because it’s heavy. However, avocado oil is excellent for skin and has many nourishing properties. For example, it can help protect against the harmful effects of UV rays and other types of skin damage. (Note: it is NOT suitable for sunscreen. Rather, it helps reduce any damage done by UV rays post-sun exposure, kind of like Aloe Vera.) Avocado oil helps replenish dry skin (like after a sunburn or in the harsh winter months), and it’s soothing to chapped skin. It’s chock full of vitamins and protein that can boost collagen and help treat psoriasis. However, avocado oil is comedogenic, so be careful in acne-prone areas. Learn more about avocado oil here.
Cocoa Butter
If you want to boost elasticity with deep hydration benefits, cocoa butter is the way to go! It may help improve circulation, and it also protects against skin damage from UV rays. Most people love it for its rich, luxurious feel.
Shea Butter
Shea butter is a rich emollient that creates a protective barrier on your skin and locks in moisture. It’s heavy, so use it sparingly. Shea butter is ideal for dry, rough patches of skin or dull, flaky areas. Shea butter is comedogenic, so it’s not typically used for facial hydration. Rub it on knees, elbows, legs, and feet for skin-softening results.
